my travel buddies

I love travelling and my last job contained a lot of travel and took me all around the world. Call it a jackpot.

Some people think of great destinations, unforgettable vacations and great experiences when they think travelling and this is for sure a part of it.

I also got the chance to explore 6a itineraries from the west to the east coast as well as these lovely red-eye flights that can save you a lot of time or what about a long distance to Hong Kong or Brazil in Economy followed by a full work schedule as soon as you touch the ground? As a matter of fact, a huge part of travelling is less glamorous than it looks on Instagram.

As always it’s the little things in life that can help you elevating you’re your experience on the quick and dirty work trips or long distance flights crossing different time zones and continents.

Here we go with my all-time travel must haves as well as my current favorites:

#BOSENOISECANCELLATION headset:

I always thought this is totally overrated till my friend Kiza told me about this sweet and handy headset which basically distills the BS 😉 around you while being on the plane.  The moment I turn them on I calm down and can either be focused on work stuff or I can dive in to a movie, music or dream world.

#COLORING post cards:

After getting hooked by coloring hype I figured flights would be a perfect time to do so. Plug your headphones in, unfold your tray table and there you go. I do it all the time.  I have a little pouch from MUJI ( they have a lot of great travel accessories) which has the perfect size to fit a couple post cards as well as a 10 piece set of great pens and of course a 6piece set of neon colored pens . Have fun!

#NONONOFOOD on the plane:

I have tried it over and over. Sometimes because I was bored, sometimes because I was super hungry – I ate the airplane food. No matter if you are in business or coach – it’s not fresh, it’s not clean, it’s not good for you. I stopped eating meals on the plane years ago and I think it makes all difference in the world. I try to fuel up before getting on the plane and I always bring nuts, an apple, a granola bar or crackers with me in case I get hungry.  All other than that – I just drink liquids. Try it and I will promise you will feel so much better as well as you will look forward to a good meal once you have arrived at your destination without feeling bloated and hungry at the same time.

#MYBEAUTYTRAVELBUDDIES:

I try to wear hardly any make up while travelling, but sometimes you just feel better putting some concealer on (yes, that’s what I did this morning as well).  Less is more definitely means more for your skin. That’s all I am saying.  From time to time I attempt to become a lip stick girl because I see others it looks so good you, ladies (!!!)  but I guess I must face the fact that in the end of the day I am and will always be a chop stick chick. My favorite chopstick is the Aveda Lip Saver.  It lasts forever and it is just the best.  The same counts for the Clarins hand and nail treatment cream.  Add a tooth-brush, tooth paste as well as your favorite make-up removal pad (let me know what your favorite is, I haven’t landed on anything yet) and you are good to go.

#MOBILE STATIONARY: Thank you, Hello and Happy Birthday Card:

My “mobile stationary” has helped me out a lot over the last 10 years travelling. You never know who you will get to meet on your trip, while being on the plane you think about folks you might want to catch up with or you realize you have a friend’s or colleague’s birthday coming up. There is always a reason. I love personal, handwritten notes as well as old school physical mail so I always carry a few spontaneous cards with me. They don’t take any space. #makeitpersonal #itsthelittlethingsinlife.

#FRESHGOESBETTER – ICE BREAKERS and EMERGEN-C:

“Do you happen to have a mint or a chewing gum?” Of course, I do. Ice Breakers Wintergreen. They are sugar-free, long-lasting and you automatically feel so fresh. Fresh mouth, fresh face, fresh mind.  As I tend to get tired of drinking water and a lot of airports only sell sugary sodas I always have an Emergen-c with me. It creates some taste, without being too sweet and it does good to me on top. win-win.

#MURPHYSLAW: fresh set of socks, underwear and a t-shirt:

Why would your luggage not make it, what should happen, you were sneakers all day and night anyway? Long story short – things happen and you will be so happy to have your OWN fresh clothes with you. Especially the first layer you wear right on your skin. You don’t need an additional outfit. Just the little essentials. It’s so worth it. Besides that I always wear compression socks.  Your legs feel so much fitter and lighter after a long flight. I couldn’t believe it, but I makes a HUGE difference.

#WASHI masking tape:

As you might know from using it at home or at the office – it is a multifunctional tool.

Having that said you can use it for so many things while traveling, for example: securing beauty products you buy at the duty-free shop, you can turn it to a patch if needed, you got your customized gift wrap if needed, you can mark pages in a book or newspaper. I could go on and on. You know what I am saying. Pick your favorite color and off you go.

Happy travels,  maika
